How to write a covering letter
Every job that you apply for should be accompanied by a covering letter, three of four paragraphs where you really get to sell yourself. If a CV is a list of skills and achievements, a covering letter is the chance to highlight the relevant points covered in the CV, and even inject some personality into your application.
The first paragraph should serve as an introduction, why are you writing, who you are and refer to the CV/application form enclosed. The next paragraph should cover why you want the job, what attracts you to the company and/or that particular sector. Paragraph three is the place to describe why the company should be interested in you. Have a look at the job advertisement, pick out three or four qualities they are looking for and give them examples of how those qualities apply to you. Be sure to highlight any relevant qualifications or work experience here too. The final paragraph should cover practicalities, such as when to contact you, when you're available for interviews and of course is the place to thank them for taking the time to read your application.
Keeping the letter formal, well presented, and spell checked will ensure that it is well recieved. Follow these simple guidelines and you will have done all you can to get your application considered seriously.
